2011 – Happenings…

First things first. Happy 2011!

We’ve been a little bit quiet on the blog front over the holiday season, but behind the scenes January has been a hectic month arranging loads of cool stuff for you to attend this year…

The first sponsored event (thanks to: Ernst & Young) is almost ready, and the date has been locked in for Thursday 10th March. All we’re letting on for now is that it’ll be a traditional Girl Geek Dinner, and more details will come shortly!

Monthly drinks will continue to be held on the 3rd Thursday of every month at the Aurora Hotel, starting this Thursday 17th February. We’re sticking to the Aurora for now, but if anybody has any suggestions for somewhere different (and central), please let us know.

P.S. Ada Lovelace Day is no longer in March. As of this year, it’s been moved to October. Until then, keep on rockin’, and celebrating the achievements of women in technology. If you see something you like, or someone doing great work, give them a shout out!

Happy Holidays!

As the days get hotter and the holiday season creeps up on us, we wanted to send out a little cheer. To you, dear girl geek – thank you for making 2010 a great year! Thank you for your attendance and participation, and not least for your geekiness :)

Also, a huge T-H-A-N-K-S to a couple of women who made this year’s Girl Geek events possible. Kellie Scott and Allison Carleton really pushed this initiative and kept it alive throughout 2010. We know that it’s been a lot of hard work and sometimes late nights, and we’d like to show them our appreciation on this blog – *APPLAUSE*!

Finally, we’d like to wish everyone a wonderful/restful/crazy end to the year. It’s been an awesome one. See you in 2011 (we’ve got loads planned)!

Call for geek girls to speak at Ignite Sydney 10 Feb 2011

What would you say if you had only 5 minutes on stage? What if you only got 20 slides, and each slide lasted just 15 seconds?

That’s the challenge of the Ignite format, which returns to Sydney on Thursday 10th February 2011. It sounds crazy, but it results in a fun and fast-paced evening where you’re guaranteed to learn something new – and not to be bored.

The Ignite Sydney organisers want to feature more women presenters, to redress the gender imbalance and allow women to have their say. You don’t have to be a presentation expert, you just need to have something interesting to say. It could be a story, a diatribe, or advice on how to build a better mousetrap.

If this sounds like something you’d like to try, fill out the form at www.IgniteSydney.com/speakers and let them know.

Girl Geeks Talk Like Lightning

Our regular monthly networking drinks will be extra special this month as we are inviting you, yes YOU, to present a lightning talk on whatever you want. You’ve got 5 minutes, with or without slides, to tell us something about tech, something geeky, or something girlie. This is a great opportunity to share your expertise or practice your public speaking.

We have 7 speaking slots.  Final sign ups on the night.

The talks mean we need some audio/visual support not currently available at the Aurora Hotel so we will be meeting at the Sydney Mechanics’ School of Arts.  Beer and snacks provided.

We are managing this with a Facebook event.  Space is limited so RSVP and get there early.

After, we will adjourn to a nearby pub for drinks and networking :)

Date:  Thursday, 21 October
Time:  6:00 PM to 10:00 PM
Location:
Sydney Mechanics’ School of Arts
280 Pitt Street, Sydney
