Do you use Python and want to go to the Python Conference on Sat and Sun 20-21st August 2011?
The organising committee of PyCON AU have secured some extra money so they can offer two ‘gender diversity grants’ this year. What this means is that two awesome female Python devotees can head to the conference for free, and one of the two will also have their travel and accommodation costs covered! Good deal for us!
The organisers have extended the deadline for entries to noon on Wednesday so if you are interested, please complete this form today. This is an opportunity to increase the representation of women in the open source community and we all know from the last GGD how important that is.
Please pass this information on!
I spoke with Tim (one of the organisers today) and he said that only had a handful (literally 5) people had applied and that he would leave the application site open until noon on Wednesday 13th, incase there were others that had missed the cut off.
More information can be found at http://pycon-au.org/2011/grants/
Here’s a note from Brianna Laugher via the AussieChix email list:
APESMA seminar – Negotation skills for young professionals
This is not an event specifically for women but it may be of interest.
And probably anyone who is a member of the APESMA union (The Association of Professional Engineers, Scientists & Managers, Australia – http://www.apesma.asn.au/ ) already knows this, but they are holding a free (for members) 3-part seminar on May 6th, 13th and 20th, called “Negotiation Skills for Young Professionals”, run by Leslie Adams, Director of the Victorian Branch. Registrations will be open up to 5th May I think.
If you have considered joining APESMA (http://www.apesma.asn.au/membership/fees.asp) before, maybe this is a good incentive
Here’s a special discount offer from Jacinta over at Perl Training Australia for Girl Geeks who’d like to learn Perl.
If you do get along to the course we’d love to know how it was – feel free to pop a comment on this post to share your experience.
G’day Girl Geeks,
I’m tired of having classes containing only men, so I’d like to give an extra special discount to the Girl Geeks in order to a) hopefully get more people on my course at all and b) get more women on it too.
If you are in Sydney and can come to our Programming Perl course next week (http://perltraining.com.au/courses/programmingperl.html ), I’m running it Monday 22nd – Friday 26th March at:
10 Barrack Street
Sydney, NSW 2000
Women who mention LinuxChix or Girl Geeks when booking can come for half price ($1500). Men who mention this message, can come for 1/3 discount: ($2000). You are invited to share this discount with your friends and colleagues. Please book before 11am Thursday 18th March, and mention your gender when booking so we can give you the appropriate discount.
Not in Sydney or not free next week? We’re planning running this course again in April in Brisbane (12th – 16th) and Canberra (19th – 23rd). I’ll extend this offer to those bookings too if you mention this email and book before the end of March (5pm, 31st March).
The course is lots of fun, and I hope to see a booking from you soon! Basic programming abilities are assumed. To make your booking go to:
